Description
The Spaceport America Relay Race: El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro Trail will consist of teams of 12 runners that complete approximately 180 point-to-point miles over 2 days. The miles are divided into 36 segments (“legs”) of varying distances, and each runner on the team completes 3 legs during the race. Each runner will start and finish their leg at “relay stations”, where they will hand off to the next runner. The course will follow the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro Trail, offering unparalleled vistas and unique challenges for the teams! Road, trails and urban trails are utilized along the course as it traverses beautiful desert vistas, farming communities and urban cityscapes. This event is an “open road” course.
The Virtual Race Option
For some teams, it may not be possible to participate in the race event at the actual course. That is why we have created a virtual race option, so that teams from around the globe can still form teams and participate in the 2-day race.
How it works: the team captain registers their team, and decides on a team name. The team then chooses where they will participate in the virtual race. This is important as it will need to be a location with either a set of treadmills or an outdoor/indoor track. If using treadmills, they will need to be reserved for the duration of the event (i.e. Saturday - Sunday). The same is required for locations with an indoor/outdoor track. Fitness centers are a great venue for the virtual race.
After the Race Director receives the team's average pace, the team captain will receive the leg maps and start time. The team captain will assign a running order for their team. The team will also receive their Virtual Race Kit, containing race swag, shirts, finisher medals, and race guide.
On race day, the team will gather at their venue location and begin at their assigned start time. They will follow the running order as if they were running at the actual event. During the virtual race, either one of the teammates or a volunteer will record the times when every runner completes a runner exchange, i.e. one runner finishes and hands off to the next runner. This tracking log will be uploaded to the Race Director for verification.
Once the last runner has finished, the team captain will distribute the finisher medals to the team. Virtual race results will be available on the offical race website within 48 hours.

The Spaceport America Relay Race is a fun, inclusive race event designed to appeal to everyone, from amateur runners to seasoned athletes. ANYONE can participate in the Spaceport America Relay Race. That is makes this event so exciting…it has the potential to empower so many people! The Spaceport America Relay Race is designed in a manner where teams can be composed of people from all fitness levels. Teams often will recruit both runners and walkers.
