SAFE EVACUATION FROM AIRCRAFT:
THE APPLICATION OF FIRE AND EVACUATION SIMULATION TO AIRCRAFT DESIGN, CERTIFICATION AND ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

PROFESSOR EDWIN R. GALEA, DIRECTOR OF FIRE SAFETY ENGINEERING GROUP (FSEG), UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH

PROGRAMME INTRO

Professor Edwin Galea, who is the founding director of the Fire Safety Engineering Group of the University of Greenwich in London will be our speaker in the September 2016 lecture. He has worked in the area of Computational Fire Engineering research since 1986 and is the author of over 250 academic and professional publications.

He will demonstrate the use of fire and evacuation modelling in aircraft design and certification applications and will provide several example applications to illustrate some of the techniques used including design analysis for a Blended Wing Body passenger aircraft and certification analysis of a VIP configured B747.

Finally, these techniques will be used in a forensic analysis of the fatal Manchester Airport B737 fire from 1985 which resulted in the loss of 55 lives. Thirty years after the incident, fire and evacuation modelling has advanced to the point where it is possible to reconstruct the accident and examine the factors that contributed to the large loss of life.  Coupled fire and evacuation simulation will be used to investigate the impact of door opening times on evacuation and survivability.

NOTE FOR REGISTRATION

Thanks for registering your attendance via our Eventzilla site.

We have streamlined our event registration process by introducing online booking platform as an alternative to email and telephone registeration for our lectures/events, as well as developing a way of tracking numbers on any lectures/events that may be oversubscribed.

When you book, please select the relevant ticket option, and the number of tickets you would like. The tickets will be automatically emailed to you, as there is currently no option for us to produce a ticket at the door.

The application asks for both registration and attendee details - even if there is only one person on the booking, you must fill in all fields. If you are reserving more than one ticket please ensure you enter the name of all attendees so they are reflected on the attendee list.

If there is any problem incurred during the registration process, or if there's anything we can improve on this tool, please contact the Branch Secretary –
