Speakers
Robert Whitaker has won numerous awards as a journalist covering medicine and science, including the George Polk Award for Medical Writing and National Association for Science Writers’ Award for best magazine article. In 1998, he co-wrote a series on psychiatric research for the Boston Globe that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Anatomy of an Epidemic won the 2010 Investigative Reporters and Editors book award for best investigative journalism. His recent book, Psychiatry Under the Influence, investigates how the influence of pharmaceutical money and guild interests has corrupted the behavior of the American Psychiatric Association and academic psychiatry during the past 35 years.

liam E. Pelham, Jr., Ph. D., ABPP, is the Director of the Center for Children and Families (CCF) at FIU, an interdisciplinary center with faculty and student involvement from the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry. In addition, he is the chairperson of the Department of Psychology. Dr. Pelham studies ADHD in children and adolescents. His interests include treatment development and evaluation, including behavioral treatments, pharmacotherapy, and the combination of the two. Most recently the treatment research has focused on dosing and sequencing in behavioral, pharmacological, and combined interventions. His summer treatment program for ADHD children has been recognized by Divisions 53 and 37 of the as a model program, is listed on the SAMHSA NREPP list, and is widely recognized as the state of the art in treatment for children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Claudia M. Gold, MD is a pediatrician and writer with a long-standing interest in addressing children’s mental health needs in a preventive model. She has practiced general and behavioral pediatrics for over 20 years, and currently specialize in early childhood mental health. Her first book Keeping Your Child in Mind: Overcoming Defiance, Tantrums and Other Everyday Behavior Problems by Seeing the World through Your Child’s Eyes, was published in 2011. Her new book The Silenced Child: From Labels and Quick-Fix Solutions to Listening and Lifelong Resilience will be released in May 2016. She is a graduate of the UMass Boston Infant-Parent Mental Health Post-Graduate Certificate Program, and the scholars program of the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute. She is on the faculty of William James College, the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute and the Austen Riggs Center. She writes regularly for Psychology Today and Mad in America.
Michael Gilbert Psy.D. has worked in human services for the past 24 years, including foster care, group home, and hospital settings. In addition, he has worked as a school psychologist within Syracuse City Schools as well as adjunct professor at local colleges. In 2000, he founded "It's About Childhood & Family, Inc.," a not-for-profit clinical and resource center. Recently, he launched the Inner Wealth Initiative in Central New York as a grassroots movement to provide families analternative to the traditional mental health system. In addition to lecturing extensively he has advocated for and conducted research evaluating non-medication and non-labeling approaches for families with children exhibiting challenging behaviors often diagnosed as ADHD, ODD, and Bipolar. Dr. Gilbert is on the Board of Directors for the International Society for Ethical Psychology & Psychiatry (ISEPP) as well as the annual conference chairperson.
Robert Foltz Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychologist & Associate Professor at Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Foltz has devoted considerable focus to the treatment of severely disturbed adults and adolescents in Inpatient and Residential Treatment settings. Since early in his studies, Dr. Foltz has been interested in the psychological treatment of conditions such as schizophrenia. Dr. Foltz has provided clinical services, as well as administrative services in Residential Treatment settings around the Chicago area for over 15 years. He has consulted with school districts in the assessment of troubled youth and has maintained an active private practice since 1999. Dr. Foltz is also on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Children’s Residential Centers and the Editorial Board for Reclaiming Children & Youth. His professional and clinical interests include child / adolescent psychopathology, psychopharmacology, the psychological & neurological impact of trauma, and critical evaluation of evidence-based treatments.
Michael W. Corrigan Ed.D. is an educational psychologist and a professor of human development and research methods at Marshall University. His research on child development and school reform has been funded through the US Department of Education, National Science Foundation, and Department of Justice. He is the author of the new book on ADHD with Rowman and Littlefield as well as numerous other books and peer-reviewed publications on educational reform and the social development of children. Dr. Corrigan also has a blog covering topics such as ADHD, child development and education at www.MadinAmerica.com
Kevin Miller is a writer & film maker who has been producing documentaries since the late 1980s. "Generation Rx" is an award winning documentary that examines the dramatic cultural shift that has taken place in our country and elsewhere, involving the use of psychiatric medication with youth. Mr. Miller has won a dozen international film and television awards, in addition to acclaim he has received for his writing.
