About This Class:
Pottery I is a 10-week intro to pottery - it’s a fun, basic, sample-everything clay class in which students create stoneware pottery using the potter’s wheel, slab roller, extruders, templates, molds, and their bare hands!
Students learn:
- to use the potter’s wheel, slab roller, extruder, molds, and templates to create both functional and sculptural stoneware pottery.
- to explore surface decoration on raw clay forms through: carving, appliqué, impressing & stamping.
- to apply color to bisqued clay with oxides, stains and glazes.
- to glaze pottery by dipping, pouring, and painting.
- to discuss, analyze, and evaluate pottery through group discussion/critique, using an understanding of craftsmanship and the elements and principles of design.
Note: Missed classes due to vacation or illness can be made up during open studio times by special arrangement with instructors.
Additional studio times for pottery students:
Wednesdays 6 – 9 pm
