“Making Work Work for Families and Guardians” is a day-long workshop sponsored by the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities to provide individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their family members and guardians with tools to navigate employment services.  Presentations will focus on overcoming barriers to employment, including:


  • Managing public benefits (Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability Insurance, Medicaid, etc.)

  • Understanding employment service agencies, including the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS), Managed Care Organizations (MCOs), disability rights organizations, and employment providers

  • Strategies for securing transportation to and from work

  • Managing earned wages and financial planning (ABLE accounts, planning for future needs, etc.)

  • Understanding how guardians can encourage employment

  • Taking employment services to the “next level” through information, advocacy, and the willingness to explore “Employment First”


Target Audience: Individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their family members and/or guardians, adult service providers, secondary transition teachers, advocates, and others interested in issues regarding employment of people with disabilities

Time: Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. The workshop is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Employment Agencies and Programs: Employment service providers for supported employment, work adjustment job coaching, and other employment services are welcome to register to set up an information table at no cost.  During the lunch break, participants will have time to visit with provider agencies and gather information and make connections.
