‘Legality with a Vengeance’: The Role of Law in the Financialization of the Food System is an interdisciplinary research seminar that brings together academics and NGO partners to critically examine the role that different legal regimes are playing in the financialization of the global food system. In the morning sessions, speakers will present and discuss research on the dynamics of global value chains, financial land-grabs, microfinance, and commodity derivatives speculation and their regulatory and legal aspects. In the afternoon sessions, participants will work through a set of orienting questions concerning how to address financialization of agriculture, strategies for influencing policy in this area, steps that financial institutions can take to protect the right to food, and how to develop curricula to promote a critical pedagogy on agricultural financialization.
