Saturday, 11 February 2017 8:45 AM - 11:30 AM EST

Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School, 17700 Dominican Drive, Dumfries, Virginia, 22079, United States.

The annual PED Talk aims to equip parents of Catholic teenagers with the skills and information needed to raise happy, faithful, and prepared teenagers to thrive in the so-called "real world" after graduation. The event is also a great chance to meet and get to know other NoVA parents.

This year's PED Talk theme is, "Teens and Social Media - How To Be An Effective Parent". We are pleased to offer two outstanding speakers each presenting on this timely topic:

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Ray Guarendi

"Standing Strong As A Parent"

Parents, teachers and anyone who works with children today are having their confidence, peace of mind, and authority undercut by a number of widespread myths that have been pushed upon them by the experts, the media and almost everybody else. Victimized by these false notions, many parents and educators are plagued by groundless worry, guilt and frustration. This presentation will foster self-confidence, peace of mind, and will put authority into your hands where it belongs.

About Dr. Ray: Dr. Ray Guarendi is the father of 10, a clinical psychologist, author, public speaker and nationally syndicated radio and television host. His radio show “The Doctor Is In” can be heard on the EWTN Radio Network. His national television show, “Living Right With Dr. Ray,” is entering its 4th season. He has been a regular guest on national radio and television, including Oprah, Joan Rivers, Scott Ross Prime Time, 700 Club, Gordon Elliot, and CBS This Morning. His first book, You’re a Better Parent Than You Think! is now in its 28th printing.

Technical Speaker: Deacon Marques Silva

"Teens and Technology"

Deacon Silva will offer a fast-paced and information-rich talk on the sometimes confusing world of technology and our teenage children. From the most current apps and websites, and how to set restrictions on your child's iPhone, to what are reasonable guidelines for online activity and internet use, every parent will be able to take away practical advice from this talk.

About Deacon Silva: Deacon Marques Silva is the Director of the Office for the Protection of Children and Young People for the Diocese of Arlington. He speaks and teaches frequently on topics related to Saint John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, Christian leadership, and evangelization. He graduated with a BS from the Franciscan University of Steubenville and completed his diaconal studies through Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College.  He has extensive experience in youth and college outreach and evangelization ministry and is a regular contributor to the diocesan blog, Encourage and Teach.  He is currently assigned to St. Leo the Great parish in Fairfax as a permanent deacon.  Deacon Silva and his wife Christine have four children.
