Fine-Art Winter Photography Workshop with Olivier Du Tre and Marc Koegel - February 2019

UPDATE: 2019 Workshop is open for registration!

Join Photographers Oliver Du Tre and Marc Koegel for this unique fine-art photography workshop! A similar workshop has been held in Calgary for the past 5 years - we are so excited to go to Saskatoon for the first time in 2019!

This workshop will put you in unique situations and locations that will yield very unique minimalist fine-art images that cannot be captured at any other time of the year!

This one-of-a-kind workshop will teach you how to make stunning black and white images in winter snow using a minimalist mindset for composition and creative camera techniques such as long-exposures.

For this workshop we include all transportation to our shooting locations.

The winter landscapes in the Saskatoon area are very unique and this workshop will have you out shooting at various locations. Expect to see abandoned farms and homesteads, trees, grain elevators and beautiful minimalist scenes like snow drifts, fence lines etc. If you like the work by masters such as Michael Kenna, then this workshop gives you very similar opportunities but without having to travel to remote Japan.

As this is a winter workshop, you have got to be prepared for temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius (equals -40 Fahrenheit) with the windchill. In the classroom, we will be adressing 'safety first' and 'technical (equipment)' topics such as:

  • What is 'Minimalism' and how to 'use' it in your photography
  • Effective Photographic Composition
  • The 'Zone-System' for Digital Photographers
  • Long Exposure Photograhy Techniques - from beginner to advanced
  • Post-Production Techniques using instructor and student images

We'll also be sure to address a variety of practical questons, such as:

  • What to wear
  • What not to do (like walking right into a scene and afterwards photographing your own footprints)
  • Planning your shooting day
  • (How to) winterize you and your vehicle (what to bring, food, etc)

A very important element of this workshop is also to provide feedback for participant images - you'll be working one-on-one with Oli and Marc in the field, and in the classroom we'll take ample time to provide everyone with in-depth reviews of their work.

Our past participants have told us over and over again how much they enjoyed these in-depth feedback sessions!

Oliver brings a wealth of knowledge of the local area, and his photographic style and techniques complement Marc's perfectly.

Together, Oliver and Marc will not only teach, but also inspire you as well!

This special Calgary Workshop will be held at the Courtyard By Marriott Saskatoon Airport. This hotel provides a great location and quick access to our shooting locations. Participants can choose to stay at the hotel for the duration of the workshop, or simply come for the lecture/ presentation and image review portions.

There is also another hotel in the immediate vincity (i.e. 2 minute walk), so participants may choose to stay at that hotel as well:

Please note that the workshop fee does NOT include Hotel accomodation. If you are not from teh area, please book your own room at one of the recommended hotels above.

Digital camera equipment, or film in any format (including 4x5 and larger) can be used. You can choose to shoot in black and white or color.

We will be in touch a few weeks before the workshop and provide specific advice on getting prepared which includes suggestions specific to the camera equipment you plan on using.
