Film Discussion: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: The Rape-Revenge Cycle

Friday, April 13th, 2018 | 7:00 to 8:30 PM

Details

This action-packed fast paced thriller by David Fincher (2012) may leave us breathless—but its sexual violence, voyeurism and gender-bending gaze take on special resonance in this cultural moment of #Me Too.

Presenters:

Emily Fox- Kales, PhD, a clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders and is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She also teaches cinema studies at Northeastern University and the Graduate Consortium of Women’s Studies and was Film Editor of Gender & Psychoanalysis. She is the author of Body Shots: Hollywood and the Culture of Eating Disorders (SUNY Press, 20ll).  She is currently a Visiting Scholar at Brandeis University’s Women’s Study Research Center.

Continuing Education Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explore the film’s psychoanalytic gaze at scopophilia and gendered aggression
  2. Explore how the depiction of rape and revenge summons the primal fantasies of Freud’s model of perversion and sadomasochism.
  3. Consider and discuss the trauma of the violent woman.
