This course covers the basics of operating CCIC/NCIC, to include the following topics:

  • Logging into and navigating OpenFox Messenger
  • Overview of available CCIC/NCIC Files
  • Nlets queries
  • Criminal History
  • How to conduct common queries
  • Hit confirmations
  • Locating records
  • Identifying received messages
  • Proper system usage
  • Dissemination
  • Storage and disposal
  • Knowing your resources

Prerequisites: None.

Trainer: To be announced.

Students will attend an 8-hour class on these topics, after which they will be directed to take a 10-question exam to complete within two weeks. After the successful completion of the exam, the student will be issued a certificate of proficiency in CCIC Level I: Basic.

Course materials:  Materials will be posted to CJIS Portal closer to when the class is held, and all enrolled students will be notified. 

This course does not cover how to enter or modify records in CCIC/NCIC.  For classes that cover additional topics, please see CCIC Level II:  Intermediate and CCIC Level III:  Coordinator.

The second half of the day will begin with an NLETS overview and presentation on how information sharing can lead to officer safety.  We are excited to announce the instructor for this 2 hour portion of the basic class will be Teri Fournier-Harsin, the NLETS Training and Education Program Manager from Phoenix, AZ. 

This session wil include a brief overview of who Nlets is, how they differ from the FBI, their governance and structure.  She will then spend some time talking about newer Nlets transactions, TASR International, DHS 5 Eyes, INTERPOL, ICE and various other transactions.  Next, she will talk about NLETS initiatives, including DL photo sharing, Corrections photo sharing, Targeted Interstate Photo Sharing, etc.  She will end the session going over resources that Nlets makes available:  Nlets website, Nlets WIKI, EPIC, etc.
