Building a Truly Private Practice: Considerations for Working Without Insurance Reimbursement

Therapists often find that the demands of health insurance companies restrict the time we can spend actually practicing therapy and can infringe on the confidentiality of our patients. This program introduces therapists to strategies for getting third party payers out of our practice so that we can work more directly with patients and act in what we and they feel is their best interest. We will explore ways to implement this goal gradually, taking into account the need to continue to serve existing patients and agencies for as long as desirable.
The initial session will address such issues as resolving therapists’ common inner resistances, ethical marketing, setting clinically based private pay fees, maintaining the practice, office set-up, supervision, and peer support. There will be plenty of time for questions.
Presenter:
Mara Wagner, Psy.D. Cert. Psya, is a supervising and training analyst at BGSP where she serves as the Director of Outreach. She has been in private practice for over 30 years and has offered frequent workshops on private practice development, dealing with money as a clinical issue, and unpacking unconscious dynamics in literature and film.
Participants who have attended the initial workshop or a previous workshop with Dr. Wagner may then elect to attend a smaller three-session coaching group geared toward implementation, according to the specific needs of the participants. Limit 10 participants.
Follow-up coaching sessions: Friday evenings 5:30 - 7:00 March 16, March 30, and April 27. $150 for the series of 3 sessions
Continuing Education Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Identify obstacles to developing an ethical successful private practice, both practical and emotional. Outline specific ways to resolve these obstacles, both internal and external.
- Analyze confidentiality, client advocacy, and burnout concerns and determine ways to minimize them.
- Work on practice development and learn to negotiate clinically based fees that are good for both patient and therapist.
