Join the faculty of BGSP, students, colleagues and community participants for 4 days of dialogue as we discuss challenges and process when working with patients struggling with addictions

 

Tuesday, July 26: Pleasure and Its Discontents: Evolutionary and Psychoanalytic Perspectives

Dr. Eugene  Goldwater, BGSP faculty & Director of Addictions Counseling, will provide an overview of a psychoanalytic understanding of addictions.  How can the intensive pursuit of pleasure lead to outcomes that are intensely unpleasant?  Are addictions driven by unconscious conflicts, maturational blocks, or unaccustomed abundance in our contemporary environment?

Dr. Jane Snyder, BGSP President, will lead a discussion drawing on her own and participants’ experiences in working with addictions and thinking about how psychoanalytic understanding may be applied.

Evening Activity: Wine and Oysters, Dr. Snyder’s Cape house, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

This seminar is designed to help the participant to:

·         Describe the underlying conflicts associated with addictive behavior

·         Explore what prevents access to the negative consequences of addictions

·         Discuss how and why addictions has grown to be a nationwide epidemic

 

Wednesday, July 27: Opioid Addictions- Impact on Self and Community

Mr. Timothy Cahill, BGSP student and film editor, will show segments from his documentary “Managing the Fix”, a provocative look at Methadone and Suboxone treatment for opioid addictions.  Discussant: TBD                                                       

Dr. Russ Lowe will present a case which started with the psychoanalytic treatment of a young man addicted to heroin but shifted to treatment of his alcoholic mother.  A psychoanalytic perspective of how addictions impact families will be examined.  Dr. Wagner, BGSP faculty, will facilitate the discussion.Evening Activity: Student Association Barbecue

This seminar is designed to help the participant to:

·         Describe how Methadone and Seboxone are used for treatment of opioid addictions.

·         Discuss the societal pressures impacting addictions and treatment of addictions

·         Explore how family dynamics are impacted by addictions

 

Thursday, July 28:  To Be or Not To Be

-Mrs. Katherine Morrell, BGSP and the Center for Group Studies faculty, will provide a case presentation of a young man’s struggle with sexual and drug addictions and his ambivalence towards living and dying.

-Mr. Juan Faraoni, BGSP psychoanalytic candidate, will discuss how countertransference has informed his work with patients in a methadone clinic setting. Discussant: Dr. Lynn Perlman

Evening Activity: Bonfire on the Beach!

This seminar is designed to help the participant to:

·         Explore the meaning of relapse in treating addictions

·         Explore the roots of sexual addiction within the context of the case presentation

·         Discuss the countertransference feelings related to treatment of the impulsive addict

 

Friday, July 29:  Recovery

 -Ms. Karen Salzarulo, licensed clinical social worker, integrates modern psychoanalytic technique into her private practice. She will discuss the treatment of a woman in a 10 year recovery from pills and alcohol. “It Hurts So Good” Discussant: TBD

 

 -BGSP Faculty will facilitate a conversation on what we have learned throughout the week: how psychoanalysts understand addictions, what psychoanalysis can contribute, and considerations on how to integrate psychoanalytic theory into the practice and treatment of patients presenting with addictions

 

This seminar is designed to help the participant to:

·         Discuss the treatment process that was effective for recovery

·         Explore the difference and similarities in addiction to pills and alcohol, and treatment observations

·         Explore the application of psychoanalytic principles to the treatment of addictions

 

 

Fee: $30.00 per day. $100.00 for the week
3 CE Credits/Clock Hours per day
