The lecture tackles the changing role of the city with special focus on cultural interaction and its implications on the arts and architecture. The assumption is that Alexandria all through her history and since her foundation by Alexander In 331BC. The city acted as a hub for cultural diversity and interaction in the whole of the Mediterranean.

 

Alexandrianism is the ultimate and most consummate symbol of multiculturalism, pluralism and eclecticism the world has ever produced, perhaps the strength of these values will be the lessons the world will be shaped in the future as a global Alexandria, a single harmonious metropolis of passion, diversity, free thought and values of tolerance for humanity.

 

Alexandria does not leave but leaves the world her eternal Alexandrianism.     

 

 

About the Speakers:

Mohamed Awad

Ph.D. architect, lecturer at the Department of Architecture, Alexandria University and Principal of Awad Associates.

 

Awad Associates is a family firm that has been practicing since 1911. He is also an architectural and urban conservationist, and founder of the Alexandria Preservation Trust, an urban and architectural historian specialized in Alexandrian modern history, Dr. Awad has authored several publications on the Alexandrian built environment.

He is a lecturer at the Department of Architecture, Alexandria University; Consultant to the Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Member of the Committee for the conservation of Alexandria, Member of the board of the Hellenistic Center at the B.A and the Archeological Society of Alexandria.

“Médaille d’honneur de la Société d’Encouragement au progrès”, France, 1996.

Title of “Ambassador of Hellenism”, Athens Municipality, 2003.

Order of Merit, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa, 2009.
