ADVANCES IN AIRPORT TECHNOLOGY

OLIVIER FREROTTE, AIRPORT OPERATIONS TECHNICAL EXPERT,

PIERRE CARPENTIER, AIRPORT OPERATIONS PRODUCT MANAGER,

PROGRAMME INTRO

The traffic at airports today has become more complex because of the increased traffic on the ground and the growth of airport infrastructures. Taxiing is a critical phase in terms of efficiency and safety, and represents significant costs for airlines who allocate several hundred kilos of fuel to this phase alone. Currently, solutions based on airport moving maps are proposed to airlines to cope with this challenge.

Airport moving maps were introduced in 2007 with the A380 and have become a basic function for all long-range aircraft. Recent changes in regulation have enabled implementation of the airport moving map function also on Electronic Flight Bags (EFB), which opens up retrofit market opportunities.

New functionalities such as Taxi Routing are now emerging to complement airport moving maps and go further in the facilitation of the critical taxiing phase. With the Taxi Routing function, pilots can insert their taxi clearance and the route is then automatically displayed on the airport map. It enables the exact position of the aircraft along the route to be known at all times and the designated parking stand to be quickly determined.

With this function, the pilot can easily be a part of the airport traffic in accordance with Air Traffic Control instructions. The ultimate goal being to have the lowest-cost taxi routes transferred digitally from tower to cockpit, which requires the deployment of standards for controller–pilot data link communications.

The Speakers from Thales will introduce to you that the Airport Operations Function brings several benefits. At operational level, for the pilot, it reduces workload and stress and provides better situational awareness. For airlines, it leads to time and fuel savings. And in general, it enables smoother traffic on ground and increased safety.

NOTE FOR REGISTRATION

Thanks for registering your attendance via our Eventzilla site.

We have streamlined our event registration process by introducing online booking platform as an alternative to email and telephone registeration for our lectures/events, as well as developing a way of tracking numbers on any lectures/events that may be oversubscribed.

When you book, please select the relevant ticket option, and the number of tickets you would like. The tickets will be automatically emailed to you, as there is currently no option for us to produce a ticket at the door.

The application asks for both registration and attendee details - even if there is only one person on the booking, you must fill in all fields. If you are reserving more than one ticket please ensure you enter the name of all attendees so they are reflected on the attendee list.

If there is any problem incurred during the registration process, or if there's anything we can improve on this tool, please contact the Branch Secretary –
