Meet today’s news media professionals. Learn what gets covered, what gets tossed and how to make it to the top of news chain. Give your media relations skills a tune up to give your employer or client the best shot at news coverage.




Brian Thompson, Reporter, NBC4 New York. Brian is an Emmy Award winning reporter who joined NBC4 in1998 covering New Jersey. Prior to joining WNBC worked for five years in Washington, D.C., covering the White House, Capitol Hill, and the Supreme Court. Thompson spent 17 years in Charlotte, N.C., as a reporter. He earned a New York Emmy-award for his work on NBC New York’s political series “What Matters” in 2005.  He has been cited by the Associated Press for Best Coverage by a New Jersey-Based Correspondent and was awarded the first Environmental Journalism Award by the NY/NJ Baykeeper. Thompson received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Florida.  



SALLY PAKUTKA is Manager of News Aggregation at the Asbury Park Press.  She began her career with the Press in 2001 as Editor of New Publications and was named Local News Editor in 2010. She started her current position in January.  Sally has been a newspaper journalist for nearly three decades. She previously worked at the Courier News in Bridgewater and the Herald News in Passaic. Sally has lived at the Shore since 1991.





CHRISTOPHER SHELDON serves as Long Branch-Eatontown Editor with  He has worked at two hyper local news publications before joining Patch, including the Westerly Sun in Rhode Island and the Ocean Star in Point Pleasant Beach.  A life time resident of West Long Branch, Sheldon earned a B.A. in journalism from the University of Rhode Island.



Gina Columbus serves as APP staff writer and joined Gannett's Talent Development Program in 2012.  Columbus serves as a metro reporter and writes lifestyles and features pieces, developed in the multiple media platforms.  Columbus launched her career as a Newsroom Intern where she contributed to a variety of features for the Islander and the Taste sections. As Editor-in-Chief of The Outlook, Monmouth University's student-run newspaper, managed a staff of 50 and earned First Place with Special Merit by the American Scholastic Press Association twice. Columbus has a B.A. in Communication from Monmouth University.



ALLISON GIBSON has served as Assistant News Director at News 12 New Jersey for the past 17 years, working to launch the channel in March of 1996, and establishing it as New Jersey’s own television station and place to go to for local news.  Previously, she had worked as a producer, executive producer and assistant news director at the CBS affiliate in Roanoke, Virginia. Allison got her start working in Public Radio, and counts meeting boxer Muhammed Ali as one of the big moments of her career.





GREG WEBER has been the owner of GSPCB since 1989 when he took the business over from his parents who were entering retirement. When he took over the business, the office was reading 255 papers, peaking at 755 newspapers as services expanded. Today, the office reads about 550 traditional print and over 4 million websites while monitoring the top 210 television markets. Greg has served as President of the Jersey Shore Public Relations and Advertising Association for three terms. He is the current President of the National Trade Association of Press Clipping/Media Monitoring Industry. Prior to entering the press clipping business, he was a senior trader for Empire of America Realty Credit Corporation in Buffalo New York. Greg is a graduate of Montclair State University.


Discussion will focus on what today’s news pros want from public relations professionals and where the industry is heading. In addition, there will be an opportunity to meet reporters and public relations professionals for networking and internship opportunities.
