Event Description

AfriNIC Ltd -  the regional Internet registry (RIR) for Africa in collaboration with the ISOC South Africa is organising a four (4) day training event for network engineers in Cape Town - South Africa



Workshop Deliverables

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • Create an IPv6 address plan and request such from AfriNIC Ltd
  • Configure and verify intra-domain and inter-domain routing for IPv6
  • Plan and deploy IPv6 in access networks anticipating the common issues




All participants are assumed to be capable of building and running IPv4 networks in either the service provider or enterprise contexts. This course shall not cover any IPv4 concepts and details of network operating systems.

  • The AfriNIC whois database: Overview, question types and querying
  • IPv4 address exhaustion - review, implications and consequences
  • IPv6 address basics - notation and representation and address types
  • IPv6 subnetting and address planning
  • IPv6 from an IPv4 perspective
  • Understanding ND and key IPv6 mechanisms
  • IPv6 address provisioning
  • Basic IPv6 address configuration and verification
  • Labs/Exercises
      • Planning IPv6 address space for a given network
      • Configuring and verifying IPv6 on hosts and routers
      • Verifying IPv6 functioning using network packet captures (tcpdump, tshark etc) 
  • IPv6 intra-domain and inter-domain: Key concepts, configuration and verification
  • IPv6 Transition Mechanisms: Scenarios, options, infrastructural elements, key concepts, configuration and verification (Dual Stack, Manual Tunneling, and 6rd)
  • The problem that transition mechanisms solve
