Event Description

On Tuesday, October 16, Out Professionals and OP.LYNX, our dynamic women's network, welcome you to a fact-filled seminar on the hidden implications of New York's recent legalization of same-sex marriage.

Background: In February of last year, President Obama, in a striking legal and political shift, determined that the Defense of Marriage Act -- the 1996 law that bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage -- is unconstitutional, and directed the Justice Department to cease defending the law in court. In June, New York State lawmakers voted to legalize same-sex marriage.

Now, what benefits do you gain from a New York marriage? What benefits are you denied by the Feds? What if DOMA is overturned?

If you marry, how should you file your taxes? Will you pay more? What if your spouse has debt? What if you want to change your name?

Do you need a pre-nup or a post-nup? What about divorce? How can you protect each other if you choose not to marry? What if DOMA is overturned?

For answers to questions like these, join us in Manhattan on Tuesday evening, October 16, at 215 Park Avenue South.
