This course will cover how and why to integrate water immersion into any maternity care setting, including the benefits of waterbirth as part of a gentle birth approach to maternity care. Waterbirth practice is based on evidence that spans over thirty years of reliable data from studies conducted in every part of the globe.
This workshop is intended to support practice by:
Preparing the provider to provide competent care during use of water immersion in labour and birth.
Broadening knowledge around key issues while planning, implementing, providing and documenting maternity care that includes water immersion.
Promoting critical thinking on issues relating to undisturbed birth and physiological transition.
Identifying evidence-informed practices to facilitate the woman’s informed choice.
Offering opportunity for each care provider to reflect on their own maternity care practices.
Behavioral Objectives:
At the end of this session participant will be able to:
1. Discuss the current ACOG/AAP position statement on birth in water, based on recent research.
2. Outline the recommended steps to prevent and/or resolve a shoulder dystocia during a birth in water.
3. List three conditions where water immersion could be used as an intervention in labour.
4. Explain the physiology of newborn transition and the significance of delayed cord clamping on newborn breathing.
5. Explain the four physiological mechanisms that prevent the baby from taking a breath in water.
6. List three instances where water immersion is contraindicated.
7. Compare and contrast Gentle Birth Practices with current hospital practice.

Workshop description
During the birth process the baby is a conscious participant who is hard wired to express the biological imperative of birth. The tasks of birth and attachment are time sequenced, specific and create the necessary and essential brain wiring for connection or separation. Evidence is presented demonstrating the psychological, physiological and neurological milestones in human development that are supported or hindered by common birth and postpartum practices.
Behavioral Objectives
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
-
List six transitional milestones of the baby immediately after birth
-
Explain why delayed cord clamping is optimal for both mother and baby
-
Discuss the role of skin to skin contact in brain development of both the baby and mother
