2 STAR PADDLESPORTS TRAINING COURSE JUNE – JULY 2018.
The course will consist of 6 sessions on a series of Thursday evenings commencing on Thursday 7thJune 2018 with the final training session on Thursday 2ndAugust 2018. Timings will be 1800 – 2000 each Thursday. During the latter sessions students who show satisfactory progress will be given the option of booking an assessment with a view to gaining the British Canoeing 2-star award.
The sharp mathematicians will notice that adds up to 8 Thursdays, and you would be correct. Sessions will not be held on Thursday 26thJuly and Thursday 2ndof August, so that gives people the opportunity to have some time to practice, get trips in or have their summer hols. However, if you still want to come on those 2 weeks, that’s ok but normal fees will apply on those nights and the coaches available will be a bit hit and miss.
1 or more of the following coaches will be available for the 6 sessions: Tom Randerson, Tracy Randerson and Caroline Fielding (other coaches may be used in addition- dependant on availability).
The training course will cost £33/person Paid on The Club web site at eventzilla. Students must be registered with fees paid before Saturday 2nd June 2018.
The club can provide appropriate boats, paddles, buoyancy aids and safety equipment. Students must provide their own appropriate paddle clothing, footwear and any refreshments required.
Part of the syllabus includes self-rescuing after a capsize and rescuing a capsized paddler (in different types of boats). This will be covered fully on the course on an appropriately warm evening.
Candidates should be the following:
· At one star, or paddle power passport level (not a requirement to have achieved the award).
· Willing to capsize and do rescue skills (whilst smiling).
· Willing to paddle both Canoe and Kayak (both with equal enthusiasm).
Just attending on a Thursday night will probably not result in candidates being capable of passing an assessment, if you want to pass an assessment you will also have to:
- Have paddled in two different locations (any 2 of the following) – canal, river, loch/lake, or sea. Different parts of large bodies of water can be counted as two different locations such as the Whinfield pool at HPP and the River Trent. These trips can be during the Saturday morning sessions up the River Trent or on any of the club organised trips during the summer. Prior experience can also be taken into account.
If anyone feels they are uncertain if they can do this but want to progress, come and have a chat with Tom, Tracy or Caroline at one of the club sessions and we’ll help you make decision. Just because you may not feel you will be capable of passing an assessment this does not necessarily mean they will not be allowed to join in with the training and improve their skills and experience and have a great time.
Full course syllabus details can be found at:
A minimum of 4 students is required (with a maximum of 6) for the course to go ahead, any less than this by Monday 4thJune 2018 and the course will be cancelled and any monies paid refunded.
Full course details will be sent out to students when they register and pay. First 6 to come will get the places, so book early.
This is a learning course and students should not be worried if they feel they do not have the required skills to complete it, the aim of the course is to give you these skills. Even if students do not complete an assessment at the end of the course they will still benefit from attendance.
